If you’ve recently been approved for the NDIS — or you’re reviewing how your current plan is managed — you’ve probably come across the term plan management. It sounds straightforward, but a lot of participants and families aren’t sure exactly what it means in practice, or whether it actually costs them anything.
The short answer? Plan management is a service that handles all the financial administration of your NDIS plan — and no, it doesn’t cost you a cent out of pocket.
So what does a plan manager actually do?
Think of your plan manager as the financial admin arm of your NDIS journey. When you receive support services — whether that’s occupational therapy, support workers, equipment, or anything else funded in your plan — your providers send invoices. Without a plan manager, you’d be responsible for receiving, checking, and paying those invoices yourself. With a plan manager, that entire process is taken off your hands.
Here’s what a good plan manager takes care of:
- Receiving invoices directly from your providers
- Checking compliance against the current NDIS price guide
- Processing payment promptly
- Tracking your budget in real time across all support categories
- Providing statements so you always know where your funding stands
- Supporting plan reviews with spending summaries and documentation
Is plan management really free?
Yes — completely. Plan management is funded by the NDIS under a specific support category called Improved Life Choices. This means the NDIS pays your plan manager directly, and that cost comes out of a dedicated portion of your plan — not from your support budgets for therapy, care, or equipment.
If you don’t already have plan management included in your current plan, you can request it at your next plan review — or in some cases, contact the NDIS to request a plan variation.
Who can use plan management?
Almost anyone with an NDIS plan can choose plan management. The main eligibility requirement is simply that your plan includes funding under Improved Life Choices. If you’re unsure whether yours does, check your plan document or give us a call — we can help you work it out quickly.
Why choose plan management over agency management?
When your plan is agency managed (managed directly by the NDIA), you’re limited to using only NDIS-registered providers. Plan management removes that restriction. You can use any registered or unregistered provider — giving you far more choice over who supports you, and often access to a wider range of services.
You also get a human point of contact who knows your plan, answers your questions, and proactively keeps you informed — rather than navigating a large government agency.
